The White Gold

Sugar, honey and rum have played a pivotal role in the history of Madeira, an island once famed as a major producer and supplier of what was historically known as “white gold” “Ouro Branco”, a liquid gold.

The island’s rugged terrain made cultivation extremely challenging, leading to the forced importation of enslaved people from Africa to work on the sugarcane plantations and in the mills. At that time, sugar was a luxury commodity, and as plantations expanded, the sugar industry became a cornerstone of Madeira’s economy.

Madeiran sugar gained renown across Europe, attracting traders and merchants who settled in Funchal and surrounding regions, including Ponta do Sol, Calheta and Ribeira Brava—all of which became significant sugarcane producers. Funchal’s port, a bustling hub of the sugar trade, frequently welcomed merchants who exchanged goods such as tools, cloth, clay, iron, meat, salt and olive oil for the prized sugar.

Like Christopher Columbus himself, Christopher Columbus 1477 Distillery® is a trailblazer, pushing boundaries through innovation while honouring the traditional art of making rum.
We aim to push the boundaries of rum as no one has before. Not out of a mere desire to break the rules, but to reimagine what the category can become—more innovative, transparent, and collaborative.

To create a truly new rum experience, we must always keep exploring, continually discovering, and never remain static. We intend to use the latest technology and even new methods to create the best super-premium rum.

In 2027, 1477CC® Distillery will open its doors in Porto Santo, combining traditional methods with cutting-edge technology for distillation, maturation, and bottling. 2027 will be the 550 anniversary of the 1477 distillery’s name. 1477CC’ MMXXVII is a brand that automatically has history and heritage behind it.

Tokenised Rum Casks

Fractional and frictionless investing and ownership of Christopher Columbus Distillery’s Super Premium Rum Casks, using Blockchain transactions secured on the Ethereum blockchain – a decentralised and distributed ledger. This will allow for funding for the distillery and reflect business at the leading edge. 

For the first time, investors around the globe can buy into the Premium Rum market through fully legally compliant, fractional, tokenised ownership. Powered by blockchain. All tokens are held in their personal wallet. No party, including 1477CC, has access to their wallet. 

We want to create a global luxury brand.

When it comes to selling distilled alcoholic drinks, there is indeed a wide range of available customers. In essence, our target market can’t be restricted to just an exclusive group of people, but all those who drink alcohol and those who would want to try out spirits and rum et al. Interestingly, nearly half (48%) of rum drinkers in the UK were found to be aged 18 to 34.

Whereas hundreds of gin bars have been created around the world in the last decade, and hundreds of different gins have been created to fill the shelves of these bars and those in hotels throughout the world, we believe the same thing will happen with rum. We also believe that we can sell in some airports and that our attractive bottles and packaging will sell, and people want to see them in exclusive bars. All reflecting quality and prestige, something the high-end market will appreciate, including in Asia and China – we have a story to tell!

It is only right that the golden nectar – Rum comes from the Golden Island of Porto Santo. Our objective is to bring soul, substance and storytelling to the fore and create a product of exceptional quality that has taken incredible skill and craft to produce.

Although we set out to establish a highly valued distillery plant in Porto Santo, producing an exquisite premium rum, a product that will be sold throughout the world, we may choose to create other spirits under the name of Porto Santo Distillery or Royal Crown Distillery, both associated entities. 

Another competitive advantage that we have is our management team; we want to have people on board who are highly experienced and understand how to grow a business from scratch to become a national phenomenon.

Our international distribution network and of course, our customer service culture will count as a strong strength for the business. One thing is certain; we will ensure that we produce the highest quality of rum, which will be successfully received by rum aficionados all over.

That will include ultra-premium Christopher Columbus 1477 Casks, Christopher Columbus XO Reserve rum, XI Special Edition, blended and hand bottled. Our rums’ production adheres to unique and traditional blending and ageing specifications, resulting in an elegant and distinctive ultra-premium spirit. Our rums will be a precise blend of carefully selected barrel-aged “pot still” rums (Batch distillation “pot stills” produce a distinctively rich, flavourful rum.)

Some Facts:

This Golden nectar was born in Madeira, the birthplace of rum in the Western world – long before it came to the Americas.

• Porto Santo is called the Golden Island.
• The rum will be the Golden Nectar from the Golden Island of Porto Santo
• In the 15th, 16th, 17th and 18th-century rum from Madeira was more valuable than today, so much so that in Europe, it was called “Ouro Branco” liquid gold and used not only as a drink but in cooking and making sweets.
• Even a Brazilian city has been called after, Oura Branca, a city located in the state of Minas Gerais. The city belongs to the Mesoregion Metropolitana de Belo Horizonte.
• Today, there is an incredible demand for small-batch liquors across the world, with the name Christopher Columbus, we can’t fail.
